Serie A, the month of May in five memes

Together with the Pitch/fork Instagram page we retrace the last month of our championship.

And this championship is over too. After nine months of games all the plots of the 2023/24 Serie A have reached their conclusion, giving joys, pains, reliefs and satisfactions. The last time we spoke, the Scudetto fight was already largely over, the fight for the European places was well on its way, but the battle to stay in Serie A was in full swing. And it was until the last moments of the last day, when two goals changed the destinies of three teams and three fans. But May was also the month of parties, farewells and assessments, which characterized the second half of the month. A fully-fledged final month (if it weren’t for that Atalanta-Fiorentina played on June 2nd…).

We want to tell you about it this time too without taking ourselves too seriously, having the Instagram page Pitch/fork lend us a hand, which together with us has combined each of the most relevant events of the last thirty days of Serie A with a song that tells it particularly well. Thus, 5 memes were born, as happened in recent months, in order to narrate the best of what happens in our championship through music and irony. As well as below, you can find the month of Serie A in five memes also on our Instagram page and on Pitch/fork.

Here we need to start with a small excursus outside the championship. As everyone surely knows, Juventus won the Italian Cup, but the triumph was overshadowed by the show of Massimiliano Allegri who, having been sent off, took off his jacket and tie, opened his shirt and screamed furiously as he left the pitch. Olimpico game, “Where is Rocchi?”. Following this scene, as well as – above all – what happened in the belly of the stadium, where Allegri allegedly had a violent argument with the director of Tuttosport and also destroyed the equipment of some photographers, Juventus has decided to relieve its coach of his duties. Thus, for the last two days of the championship, someone else has to sit on the bench and the choice of the Juventus management falls on the coach of the spring team: Paolo Montero.

It’s strange to see Montero dressed to the nines wandering around the technical area, when we were instead used to seeing him in the black and white shirt brutalizing the attackers of the opposing teams, but we will have to get used to it, even if for now we will no longer find him on the Juventus bench. Choosing the song to match Montero’s engagement we didn’t miss the opportunity to use it Lil Nas X’s song of the same namewhich became a global success in 2021. Adding a further nuance are the lyrics of the song, which at a certain point read: “Call me when you want, call me when you need / Call me in the morning, I’ll be on the way”. The perfect song for every ferryman.

Mbaye Niang scores Empoli’s saving goal in the 93rd minute

26 May, 8.45pm, Frosinone-Udinese and Empoli-Roma. At stake is the salvation of two Ciociarians, Friulians and Tuscans. The tension is palpable, in Frosinone the result does not budge, in Empoli the hosts advance, but are soon caught again. A double draw would condemn Nicola’s team. In the 76th minute Udinese unlocked the Stirpe’s match, putting Frosinone at risk but also slightly complicating things for Empoli: at that point the Tuscans had to rely only on themselves, looking for the saving goal. They didn’t make it until the 93rd minute, so Frosinone and Udinese would be safe arm in arm and Empoli condemned to Serie B. But exactly in the 93rd minute – thanks to a Roma defense that wasn’t exactly impenetrable – the long-awaited goal arrives which guarantees the Azzurri’s remaining in Serie A at the last gasp.

It is to realize it Mbaye Niang, former future AC Milan star, returned to Italy six years after his last experience with Torino and was immediately decisive for Empoli’s stay in Serie A, with whom he scored 6 goals in 14 games this season. A man of salvation in all respects, and consequently to act as the soundtrack to his liberating celebration after the goal against Roma we put Salvation dei Cranberries. The song talks about salvation from something else, from something a little more serious, but there is a verse that fits perfectly with the image: “Inject your soul with liberty / It’s free, it’s free”.

Claudio Ranieri saves Cagliari and retires from football

In 2022, at the age of 71 Claudio Ranieri had decided to accept the call from Cagliari, who had just been relegated to Serie B. For the Roman coach, being on the Sardinian bench was a return, given that his career as a high-level coach had begun there, with the double promotion from Serie C1 to the Serie A conquered between 1988 and 1991. After having once again brought Cagliari back to the top flight, Ranieri decided to stay for one more season – the one that has just ended – and managed to close the circle, outlining a script to movie: salvation achieved 33 years after the firstleading a team that didn’t give up an inch for the entire duration of the championship, even when it seemed destined to be relegated.

Cagliari was ready to confirm the former Roma player on their bench for another year, but Ranieri made the decision that was perhaps wiser at the time, remaining in his character until the end: stop training, at least in club football. The right end to a great career, which Ranieri ends surrounded by the love and respect of his teammates and opponents. We therefore could not fail to pay him a tribute too, greeting him properly. The choice fell on Godspeed of Frank Ocean, which in the title contains a wish for a safe journey and good luck. Thanks for Leicester and everything, Claudio.

Riccardo Orsolini was the absolute protagonist of Bologna’s Champions League party

Bologna’s historic Champions League qualification had been in the air for some time. However, the official announcement only arrived on the weekend of 11-12 May, when the rossoblù beat Napoli at the Maradona and just over twenty-four hours later Atalanta defeated Roma, certifying at least the fifth place of Motta’s team . Bologna, however, were playing away, so the party inevitably split into two: the spontaneous one, divided between Casteldebole and Piazza Maggiore, on the evening of the mathematical qualification and then the grandiose and planned one in the following home match, namely Bologna -Juventus. In both, one protagonist in particular stands out above all: Riccardo Orsolini.

Immediately after Atalanta-Roma he “kidnapped” the DAZN correspondent Alessio De Giuseppe and took him around Bologna in the car, as well as then reaching the fans in the square, without worrying about not being recognised. At the end of Bologna-Juventus he can be seen wandering around the microphones of DAZN, his teammates and the curve wrapped in a European flag and wearing a pair of glasses with one red and one blue lens, similar to 3D glasses. The glasses then reappear a few days later, on the occasion of the parade in the city on the open-top bus: they are now protagonists of the party too. “And with sunglasses / We were having breakfast” recites a song by Marie Antoinette, and we cannot exclude that Orsolini did the same.

The Cannavaro brothers console Eusebio Di Francesco after Frosinone’s relegation

While we were rejoicing in Empoli, the drama of relegation arriving at the last minute was taking place in Frosinone. In a completely silent stadium, animated only by the chants of the Udinese fans, they, however, safe, wanders around a destroyed man. He is Eusebio Di Francesco, who came within a whisker of a salvation that could have changed the trajectory of his career and who instead finds himself faced with yet another failure of his post-Roma years. The Frosinone coach is alone, he is crying, but at a certain point two figures in the opponents’ uniforms approach him to console him.

They are the two Cannavaro brothers, for five matches respectively coach (Fabio) and assistant (Paolo) of Udinese, which led to a difficult salvation. They approach Di Francesco, talk to him and they hold him in a hug, which takes very little to make the rounds of all the social pages as an example of “beautiful football”. It is a moment that shows how easily joy and pain intersect in football, a moment that brings together two opposing states of mind in an embrace. To summarize this mystique, this journey into feelings, we have chosen to appeal to Cosmowho included a song entitled Proper in his latest album The Hug. A grip that Di Francesco hopes to relive one day on the other side of the barricade. The happy one.
