On the second day of play, the Turtles first met the hosts, the Mainz Athletics. After a scoreless first inning, Speyer scored the first points. The guests cleverly exploited a weak phase of the Mainz pitcher. A combination of walks and hits meant four runs for the Turtles.
Mainz reacts
This led to the first pitcher change for the hosts, and the Speyer team had to readjust. On the Turtles’ side, Jonathan Schröer made his second appearance as a pitcher. He showed a solid performance throughout the entire game, and that in his year in this position.
The A’s also showed that they are a candidate for the top spots and took a 5:4 lead after the third inning. The Turtles, as guests, were always ahead, but the home team countered each time. The score was 6:7 after the fourth inning. And after Speyer tied the score at 7:7 in the last inning, Mainz achieved the final score of 8:7.
Under pressure
In the second game against the Beckerich Hedgehogs, the Turtles had a weak first and last inning, when the Luxembourgers scored five and seven runs respectively. In between, the defense didn’t allow anything. In the fourth and fifth innings, Speyer managed to score 2:12. Next week, they’ll be heading back to Mainz.
To stay in the championship race, two wins against the A’s and Koblenz are needed.
