Singapore’s Top Mixed Doubles Pair Eliminated in First Round of Indonesia Badminton Open

Singapore’s top mixed doubles pair Koh Wing Kai/Tan Wei Han were eliminated in the first round of the Indonesia Badminton Open (Super 1000) on Wednesday (June 5). They lost 0-2 to the world’s 28th Japanese pair Yuki Kaneko/Msaki Matsutomo.

Xu Yongkai/Chen Weihan, ranked 17th in the world, have a slight advantage in the past three meetings with two wins and one loss. For the fourth time in this tournament, Yuki Kaneko/Misaki Matsutomo won 21-19, 22-20.

The Chinese team was in the lead against the Japanese team, but Chen Wei Han accidentally twisted her right foot when returning a ball in the first game and continued the game after seeking treatment. Xu Yongkai admitted that he was also affected by Chen Wei Han’s injury, so his performance was not at his best.

Martin Andrew, technical director of the Badminton Association of Singapore, said in response to Lianhe Zaobao’s inquiry: “She (Chen Wei Han) landed unsteadily when she jumped to the right and injured her right ankle. She feels uncomfortable but can continue to move. We need to observe her recovery in the next one or two days.”

Singapore’s men’s singles player Loh Kean Yew was eliminated on Tuesday (4th), and there is no Singapore representative competing in Jakarta. Their next match is the Australian Open (Super 500) which will start next Tuesday (11th). Xu Yongkai/Chen Wei Han’s first round opponents are the Malaysian combination Yap Ruiqing/Xiao Zixuan, and Loh Kean Yew’s first round opponent is Indian player Ravi.

An Se-young, who won the championship in Singapore last week, also moved to Indonesia this week. In the first round, she will face the 17-year-old Japanese player Tomoka Miyazaki, who has been on a strong upward trend recently.

Miyazaki Tomoka won the first game 22-20, but ran out of energy in the deciding game, and An Se-young eventually reversed the game 21-7, 21-11.

An Se-young said after the match: “Although she is very young, she performed very well and moved freely throughout the court. Her playing style is very different from mine, so I must prepare my strategy well next time we play against each other. She is very young and confident. I was not as confident as she was when I was her age.”

In addition, the men’s singles player who suffered an upset on the day was world No. 3 Jordan. As a host player, he was defeated by Malaysia’s Liang Junhao 21-13, 16-21, 21-12 in the first round of men’s singles.
