Sir Andy Murray’s farewell tour has had to be interrupted again. In Miami, the 37-year-old Scot sustained an ankle injury, and in yesterday’s match in Queens, the five-time winner of the London grass tournament had serious problems with his back and right leg. Murray was in pain and had to give up his second-round match against Jordan Thompson after just five games, leaving the court to a standing ovation from the fans. And that was just one day after reaching the milestone of his 1000th match on the ATP Tour.

In hindsight, Murray wishes he hadn’t even gone on the court. And when Sir Andy Murray has to retire due to injury, you know it’s really serious. It’s been 11 years since the former world number one had to abandon a match – despite having an artificial hip. “I don’t know exactly what the problem is. I just know that this is something I’ve never experienced before,” said Murray at the press conference afterwards. “I’ve struggled with back pain today, yesterday and in the last 10, 11 years of my career, but I’ve never experienced anything like this. So I don’t know what the procedure will be like or what to expect.”

Because even though the last few years have gone quite well, it has been extremely difficult physically. “Of course I’ve tried to work on it and find ways to go on the court and play at this level. But tennis is a very, very tough sport,” said Murray after his supposed last match at the ATP 500 tournament in Queens. Murray received a wildcard for the Olympic Games and the two-time gold medalist was determined to accept it, assuming his body can cope, of course. So now it’s a case of keeping our fingers crossed!
