Spanish Athletes Aim to Surpass Barcelona 1992 Feat in Paris 2024 Olympics

Today, several names returned to the fore in the cabals that indicate the Spanish path to record the best performance in its history, surpassing the feat of the Barcelona 1992 event.

The tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, the triple jumper Ana Peleteiro, brand new champions of Roland Garros and the European tournament, and the Olympic badminton champion in Rio de Janeiro 2016, Carolina Marín, were highlighted by the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), Alejandro Blanco.

‘When we analyze the possibilities, the results of the year 2023 and 2022 of these Olympic events, we see that we have the best results,’ he noted.

After the presentation at the COE headquarters of the ‘ADO, Making History Together’ campaign, Blanco took the opportunity to somewhat warm up the atmosphere on the threshold of Paris 2024.

‘Overcoming Barcelona (22 medals) is the great challenge and I am convinced that Paris will be great Games for Spain. But all this is impression. People are aware that the possibility of a medal is there,’ he commented.

Likewise, he took the opportunity to refer to Carolina Marín as one of the main candidates to become Spain’s flag bearer at the City of Light event, although he admitted that it is a matter to be analyzed.

‘Carolina Marín would be a great standard bearer. But you have to be very careful with the issue, because for people who compete the next day it is very complicated, since they will spend seven hours thinking about other things,’ she pointed out.

The leader stated that there are a ‘series of circumstances’ that must be ‘considered and assessed’ to make the decision, and recalled that the decision on the flag bearer is made by the Board of Olympic Federations. ‘We have a rule that has been imposed in this house since the Athens Games, and that is what it has to be. Before meeting we will look at who has the most merit based on that standard,’ he announced.

He pointed out that based on merits, it will be seen if Carolina, a world-class athlete, should be called, “but I don’t think she wants to be there for seven hours.”

Blanco, who reiterated the presence of two Spanish flag bearers, a man and a woman, stressed that ‘above the norm is that the athlete can be there’ depending on their respective competitive calendars.

Still with some hopes to be realized, such as the men’s basketball team that will fight for a ticket to Paris in the July pre-Olympic in Valencia, he predicted that around 370 athletes will represent at the summer event.

We must encourage Spain and think that in these Games there are possibilities of achieving the great feat and obtaining 22 medals or more, he noted.
