Special Olympics Korea International Unified Sports Competition: Promoting Inclusivity and Athlete Health

The Special Olympics Korea International Unified Sports Competition for people with developmental disabilities and non-disabled people will be held in Inje-gun, Gangwon-do from the 14th to the 16th.

Unified sports are sports activities in which disabled and non-disabled people train and participate in games as a team.

Hosted by Special Olympics Korea and sponsored by Inje-gun, this tournament will feature 410 athletes from 40 teams in five sports: basketball (3-on-3), volleyball, soccer (7-a-side), floorball, and badminton.

63 athletes from 6 teams from 5 countries in the Special Olympics East Asia region – Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Mongolia, and China – will also participate.

To ensure a safe competition, Special Olympics Korea plans to deploy 37 clinical managers and medical support volunteers to conduct health check-up programs for athletes participating in the competition, including eye, oral, internal medicine, nutrition, health, and flexibility strength tests.

Kwon Heon-ju, in charge of sports marketing, said, “We hope that this competition will be an opportunity to improve awareness for a society where disabled and non-disabled people live together, and we will do our best to deploy medical staff and inspect facilities to ensure the safety of athletes.”
