Spurs Strategy for the 2024 NBA Draft: Will They Make a Move or Stay Put?

By Mathieu S. | NBA Editor

Only a few days left before the draft and no one knows if the Spurs will remain wisely in fourth position. The franchise, however, continues to explore several scenarios…

Unlike last year, the result of this 2024 draft remains a bit of a mystery to this day. While Victor Wembanyama was the obvious number 1 in 2023, doubt is allowed for this new edition, although Zaccharie Risacher is the favorite of many. That could change, especially if the Spurs decide to cause a little trouble.

If any team can afford to upset the established order, it’s San Antonio. With choices 4 and 8, as well as future Hawks picks (recovered during the Dejounte Murray trade), the Texan franchise can formulate a good offer to recover first position. But is it worth it for Risacher, or even Alex Sarr? Again, this is far from a certainty.

Spurs ready to trap other franchises?

However, the Spurs may be trying to bluff. The first rumor leads to Donovan Clingan, who is nevertheless a Rudy Gobert-style pivot. A promising player, but incompatible on paper with Victor Wembanyama, who shone this season at position 5. But for Jonathan Givony, the franchise has a simple message to the competition.

Imminent trade to Spurs? A Frenchman cited just before the draft!

Jonathan Givony : “The Spurs explain to other franchises that they will take the best player available in positions number 4 and 8, despite shortcomings on the backcourt and in terms of shooting, as well as in creation. San Antonio appears to be taking a fairly patient approach, as more attractive options will become available in the near future. »

The Spurs can choose to go up in the draft to take Risacher, or simply keep picks 4 and 8 by taking the best players available. Anything is possible at this point, with the front office in an advantageous position. What we will remember is that Wembanyama or not, do not count on the Spurs to shake up everything this summer.

Note that in this scenario, Risacher and Sheppard, the best shooter in the draft, would no longer be available. Just like Sarr. Givony believes point guard Stephon Castle is the most likely.

“With Risacher and Sheppard out of reach in such a scenario, Castle would be the likely candidate to join San Antonio. »

Lots of options for the Spurs before the draft, and little time to make a decision. The franchise is in any case trusted, to the point where the other franchises have received the message.
