San Antonio selected Stephon Castle as the number 4 pick in the 2024 draft and he couldn’t be more grateful. Although the Texans had only 22 wins in the 2023-24 campaign, the future looks more than bright with Victor Wembanyama as their franchise player. The number 1 pick in the 2023 draft has shown that he is ready to be a generational player and the franchise is working as such, and wants to surround him with the necessary pieces so that his basketball shines without restraint.
And right in that scenario Castle appears. Formed at UConn, the 19-year-old forward is still impressed by arriving in San Antonio and being able to be one of Wembanyama’s squires, who once Castle’s selection was made official picked up the phone to call him, congratulate him and start building a team.
“I laughed and told him that of course I knew who he was. The thought of playing with him, of course, is in your mind, but obviously it doesn’t feel real until it becomes a reality. I mean… Just knowing that he’s going to be my future teammate makes me really excited about what our future will look like,” he said.

And if being with the French genius is an incentive, being trained by a legend like Gregg Popovich after having been under the tutelage of Dan Hurley during his college years is no less so. This is how he himself explains it.
«The mere idea of playing for Coach Pops already seems unreal to me. Going from probably the best coach in college basketball to Pops, a legendary coach, I feel like it’s the perfect situation. I think I’m in a position that any basketball player would want to be in being able to play for two high-level coaches like them. “I’m excited to be able to learn from him, simply to be able to play for him and grow,” he says.
