Success at the 3rd Boys’ Sports Day: Plans for Expansion and Inclusion of Girls’ Sports Day

The day was planned in advance by Wanderers coach Maite Frey de Mella together with PRS sports department head Stefan Rapp. Almost 80 boys from grades 3 and 4 were accompanied to the baseball field by PRS principal Annedore Pflomm and school social worker Gregor Rudloff, where they were able to show off their sporting skills. At the same time, Stefan Rapp and his colleagues organized an alternative program for the girls, which was also well received, according to the organizers.

Four groups of 20 children each go through the stations

For the boys, there was a short warm-up program led by school social worker Anna-Maria Berglar, in which all three sports were integrated straight away. In groups of 20 children each, all sports were completed one after the other.

The athletics coaching team of VfL Herrenberg, Maya Jarak and Simon Link, led the exercises. The children sprinted, completed a relay hurdle race, threw and exerted themselves in the long jump.

At the same time, Henrik Riester and Jona Besch shouted “Hajime” to their judo protégés. They immediately understood that this meant something like “let’s go” for their “O-goshi”, the so-called hip throw, which they had just learned from the two trainers of the Herrenberg Judo Club. For this, the judoka, who are both active in the city’s youth ring, had specially spread out the large judo mats on the grass and swapped the sports hall for a sunny training spot in the middle of the baseball field.

And of course baseball was also played on the Wanderers field. Under the direction of youth leader and student coach Ann-Christin Cassisa and junior player David Rothfuß, the children worked on their hitting technique for home runs. At the same time, the children practiced throwing and catching with the unfamiliar baseball glove with Maite Frey de Mella and school social worker and T-ball coach Anna-Maria Berglar.

Both went so well that four teams were quickly formed for a real game. David Rothfuß immediately discovered a few talented young people, whom he invited to take part in the club training at the awards ceremony and gave out vouchers for five trial training sessions. The girls at the elementary school had already responded so well in the autumn that a new girls’ team was formed straight away.

Sports day is to be expanded, more classes will be added

A loud “yes” was heard when asked whether the children enjoyed it. The 3rd Boys’ Sports Day is scheduled for next spring. Before that, however, the 3rd Girls’ Sports Day will take place in the autumn, and planning is already underway.

Principal Annedore Pflomm was enthusiastic and thanked all the coaches and supervisors who were once again able to put on a varied sports day. Pflomm announced that two third grade classes would be added next school year. The next sports days will therefore be planned a little bigger. The Wanderers, as organizers, are happy to take on this challenge again.

Next Monday they will continue with the next school program – this time they will be visiting the Affstätt elementary school to play baseball with the fourth grade.
