Summer Fun for Kids: Festivals, Activities, and Events in Vienna

Who still knows box or temple hopping, tenners and blind man’s buff? Children and games festival Children can try out the sometimes forgotten activities to their heart’s content. The largest open-air museum in Lower Austria, with its historic village ensemble including an inn, school, grocery store, cellar lane, craft houses and churches, provides insights into the everyday life of children and, of course, adults in times gone by. You can experience authentically how the villagers lived and worked around 1900.

There are also two children’s playgrounds where you can romp around to your heart’s content. If you get hungry, the cozy village inn right on the village square will spoil you with regional dishes. Alternatively, idyllic picnic areas invite you to linger.

Reading promotion cannot start early enough. Reading in the park, the holiday campaign of the Institute for Youth Literature brings books directly to children in the summer – to the playground and the parks. Picture books, children’s crime novels or non-fiction books can be borrowed and studied on site. Of course there is also reading aloud and crafts. At the beginning of the holidays, almost a tradition, a huge Lego construction site started. Children all ages are invited to simply come along and help build on 100 square meters.

It starts tomorrow, Thursday. The ASVÖ Vienna invites you to the Speising sports complex for the annual Family sports day. The range of activities includes sports such as football, judo, floorball, rowing and an obstacle course with the catchy name “Wipe Out”. (June 27, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.).

Immediately after the award ceremony on Friday, it’s time to head to Wollzeile. This is where the now traditional Pirate festival. Families can look forward to a treasure hunt, live music from the Danube Pirates Asagan and more. Don’t forget to bring your certificate, because then you can get free ice cream! (Wollzeile, June 28th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

Also on Friday will be the opening of the newly created Tangentenparks There will be a lavish celebration on two days on the approximately 60,000 m2 area with sports stations, a live show by Rolf Rüdiger, a bicycle course, table tennis and children’s games for the very little ones. And: there will also be free ice cream. (28th & 29th June, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

On Saturday, kids and adults will have to share more. It starts with the Southwind Street Festival. The 40th anniversary party will take place in the Old AKH with live music, workshops and an extensive children’s program with children’s yoga, face painting and a seed bomb workshop (29.6, 2 p.m. & 30.6, 12 p.m.).

As every year, the WienXtra holiday game gives schoolchildren who have stayed at home the opportunity to experience more in Vienna than on holiday. The 9-week summer program starts in the Donaupark. Not only is the 60th anniversary of the popular green space in the 22nd district being celebrated there, but also the Holiday play kick-off party with 40 great hands-on stations, trampoline jumping, outdoor cinema and crafts, painting and make-up. This weekend, the KinderKunstLabor opens in the Lower Austrian capital, a house for contemporary art for children up to 12 years.
