On Friday, national coach Julian Nagelsmann officially removed goalkeeper Alexander Nübel (27) from VfB Stuttgart from his provisional European Championship squad. The reason for this is that he wants to have more options on the field and, according to UEFA regulations, he is only allowed to nominate goalkeepers in the event of an injury. However, Nagelsmann will be bringing in a rather unexpected fourth goalkeeper for his training sessions from next week: Jan Reichert from 1. FC Nuremberg. What “Bild” first reported was confirmed by the second division club a short time later.

“I was out with my brother when I got the call and was completely perplexed. I couldn’t believe it at first, but I’m really looking forward to this special opportunity. It’s a huge honor for me and makes me incredibly proud. I’ll do my best and soak up everything,” said Reichart in a statement from Nuremberg on Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old, born in Schweinfurt, played 25 games for the club’s reserves in the Bavarian Regional League last season, keeping a clean sheet nine times. He made his professional debut on the last matchday of the second division in a 1:4 defeat against HSV. He is expected to relieve Manuel Neuer (38), Marc-André ter Stegen (32) and Oliver Baumann (34) in the national team’s training sessions.

According to the “Bild”, Reichert does not have a long journey from Nuremberg to Herzogenaurach and can always help out. He is also considered a modern, competitive goalkeeper. In the coming season, he is considered a potential number one for the Franconians, where Christian Mathenia (32) lost his regular place in the second half of the season to Carl Klaus (30), who will be leaving the club.
