Suspended Wimmer hopes to return in the quarter-finals

Patrick Wimmer will be suspended for the Austrian national team’s European Championship round of 16 match on Tuesday (9 p.m.) in Leipzig. The VfL Wolfsburg attacker, who received his second yellow card in Tuesday’s 3-2 win against the Netherlands, is confident that he will play again in the tournament.

“I believe that we have enough quality to win the next game,” said the 23-year-old from Lower Austria on Wednesday in an ÖFB press conference. “I am preparing myself for the fact that I have the next game in ten days. I have a lot of trust in my colleagues,” stressed Wimmer. “I want to play again in the quarter-finals.” This is scheduled for July 6 in Berlin, where the Austrians not only have their team headquarters, but have also celebrated two European Championship victories.

Wimmer particularly praised the depth of the squad. “We saw that with four changes we can beat the Dutch.” The group victory secured by victories against Poland (3:1) and the Netherlands is not a given. “But I wouldn’t call it a miracle either,” said Wimmer. “We have already played a very good qualifier. And we have already proven several times that we have the mentality.”
