SV Werder Bremen’s Stadium Renamed “Weserstadion” as Sponsorship Ends: Club Seeks New Naming Partner

Due to the insolvency of its namesake “Wohninvest”, SV Werder Bremen’s stadium is once again called “Weserstadion” after five years. The Bundesliga club is looking for a new name sponsor.

In the summer of 2019, the previous sponsor “Ewe” sold its rights to the real estate company “Wohninvest”. Over ten years, three million euros were to flow annually to the Bundesliga club, which in return renamed its stadium “Wohninvest Weserstadion”.

After five years, the partnership is now ending prematurely. Because the Baden-Württemberg company filed for bankruptcy at the end of May and can no longer cover the costs, all contracts will be terminated on June 30, 2024. SV Werder’s home stadium will therefore initially bear the name “Weserstadion” again, as it was called from 1947 to 2019.

Costs must be covered

Nevertheless, Bremen is “in talks about new solutions for name sponsorship,” explains Klaus Filbry, chairman of the SV Werder management board. “Due to the reconstruction in the years 2008 to 2010, there is a need for financing that must be covered. The financial necessity of this measure is undisputed on the part of the city, us and Bremer Weser-Stadion GmbH.”

According to Filbry, it is “not yet clear” whether the stadium will keep its name as it did during the partnership with “Ewe”, present a first name solution as it did recently, or sell the name entirely to a sponsor.

Time until spring 2025

They want to take their time until spring 2025 to find a new partner. “The issue is complex and emotionally charged. We want to find a good and suitable solution, so we will take enough time to do so,” promises Filbry.
