It is one of the most followed disciplines at the Summer Olympics: swimming is the record-breaking water sport. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, the competition will take place at the Arena La Défense in Paris.
Although swimming is very popular nowadays, its origins date back to prehistoryalthough only in the 19th century did this sport become competitive.
Initially, breaststroke was the only stroke practiced: since then, the discipline has grown to include four main strokes: butterfly, crawl, dorso e rana. The first Olympic competitions took place in a natural environment, and then took place for the first time in a swimming pool in 1908, at the London Olympic Games. In 1896, at the Athens Games, only the freestyle and breaststroke events were held: in 1904 the backstroke was added, followed by the butterfly in 1956, at the Melbourne Olympic Games.
At the Summer Olympics, swimming must take place in one Olympic swimming pool 50 meters long. In all, there are nearly twenty different formats, varying in distance and variety of swims (medley, freestyle, etc.). It is a competition in which the athletes are the real protagonists, setting records and winning medals.
