The last minute trip to Washington was therefore not trivial. After training with around ten NBA franchises, Kyshawn George traveled to the American capital this beginning of the week. “Not to play but to chat and eat” he told us during a video interview last weekend. It seems that the discussions and the menu were tasty.

Wednesday evening, after 2.5 hours of waiting at his table in the company of his parents, his brother Jamal, his agent and two childhood friends, Kyshawn George finally saw his name called out by NBA boss Adam Silver. It was 4:46 a.m. in Switzerland when the 20-year-old from Chablais climbed the steps and placed a Knicks cap on his imposing hair. But a few moments earlier, the New York franchise had exchanged its draft choice with the Wizards.

The upcoming arrival of Kyshawn George in Washington was greeted with outpourings of joy in Monthey, in a small room at the School of Commerce and General Culture. All night, 80 people remained glued to a giant screen broadcasting a ceremony taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Including Suzanne, Kyshawn’s grandmother. “It was a distressing and exceptional moment at the same time,” she reacted.

Born on December 12, 2003, in Valais, Kyshawn George did all his youth classes at BBC Monthey, from 2010 to 2019. He then left the family cocoon to emigrate to France, to the Chalon training center, as before him Thabo Sefolosha and Clint Capela, the first two Swiss to join the NBA.

In Chalon, the Valaisan splashed his talent in the Pro B hopefuls championship – he was elected in the best five – and forced the doors of the first team in the fall of 2022.

A year later, he flew to the United States and Miami. With the Hurricanes, in NCAA I, the guard had a promising season (8 points on average), standing out for his 3-point skill (41% over the season). Something to catch the eye of Washington Wizards recruiters.
