Switzerland Faces Turf Trouble Ahead of European Championships Opener

The European Championships start in Germany in a few days. Switzerland will also be taking part, with their first match on Saturday. But the Swiss are having problems preparing.

Switzerland had imagined it differently: On Monday, Granit Xhaka’s team moved into the European Championship quarters in Stuttgart, but found that the grass was anything but good. The quality was “clearly inadequate,” said national team director Pierluigi Tami after the public training session in the Stuttgarter Kickers stadium.

They are already looking for alternatives. UEFA has “promised to do everything to improve the situation,” reported the 62-year-old. There are unevenness in the composition of the turf, explained Swiss press spokesman Adrian Arnold. They have known about the problem since the weekend. But the players, according to director Tami, were nevertheless negatively surprised.

Freelance journalist Frank Hellmann shared a photo of the pitch at Gazi Stadium on Monday.

The Swiss will play their first match in Group A on Saturday in Cologne against Hungary. On the last matchday of the preliminary round, they will face hosts Germany in Frankfurt on June 23.
