Switzerland prepare surprise to knock out Italy

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Swiss coach Murat Yakin said his team is preparing a surprise to eliminate defending champions Italy in the last 16 of the 2024 European Cup in Berlin on Saturday night.

The Swiss coach of Turkish descent admires Italian football, which is full of tactics, but his team has also developed rapidly in recent years.

“We have done our homework, not only looking at these three games but the games before this tournament,” Yakin was quoted as saying by AFP on Saturday.

“We are always surprised by the way Italy combines things, players and tactics,” said Yakin.

“We are ready to face Italy. They are the home of tactical football and I like the way they do things,” said the former Spartak Moscow and FC Basel coach.

“But we are focused on preparing ourselves, our tactics, maybe even catching them off guard,” he said.

The two teams drew twice in 2022 World Cup qualifying. Switzerland finished top of their group while Italy failed to qualify for Qatar.

“Hopefully tomorrow night we can feel the same thing. We have fought hard to get here,” continued Yakin.

Switzerland and Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer believes the match will be decided by key moments.

“Our goal tomorrow is to win. This is a knockout game where every incident will be decisive,” said Sommer.
