Taylor Fritz Dominates Eastbourne, Alejandro Tabilo Secures First Title in Mallorca

Fritz, unbreakable

Taylor Fritz was unbeatable. The American, seeded No. 1, won the ATP 250 tournament in Eastbourne for the third time in his career on Saturday, logically dominating the Australian Max Purcell (94th) in two sets (6-4, 6-3). After his previous victories in 2019 and 2022, the 13th player in the world is the first to register his name for the third time on the list of winners of this tournament. He did not lose a single game on his serve during the week.

In the first set, Purcell, who at 26 was playing in his first final, managed to hold his own against the American until 4-4, before losing his serve. The second set was less balanced, with Fritz taking off more quickly, to win in just over an hour of play (1h09). At 26, the American also won the eighth title of his career on the main circuit. At Wimbledon, where he reached the quarter-finals in 2022, Taylor Fritz, who will be seeded No. 13, will face another Australian, Christopher O’Connell (76th) in the first round on Tuesday. Max Purcell, for his part, will face the Finn Otto Virtanen (149th).

First for Tabilo

Alejandro Tabilo opened his counter. The Chilean, 24th player in the world, won her first tournament on grass in Mallorca (ATP 250) on Saturday, beating the Austrian Sebastian Ofner (54th) in the final, in two sets 6-3, 6-4. Tabilo thus won the second title on the main circuit, after his victory in Auckland, on hard court, at the start of the season.

In May, the 27-year-old Chilean also caused a sensation at the Masters 1000 in Rome, where he managed to eliminate the world number 1 at the time, Serbian Novak Djokovic, before losing in the semi-final to German Alexander Zverev. This title in Mallorca will allow Alejandro Tabilo, who is therefore having the best season of his career, to enter the Top 20 (19th) for the first time on Monday. While he is the first Chilean in the Open era to win a tournament on grass, he will have the opportunity to confirm his good skills on this surface on Tuesday at Wimbledon, where he will face Briton Daniel Evans (61st) in the first round.
