Team 3 of the 89ers Suffers Tough Losses in Hanover: A Recap of the Braunschweig’s Disappointing Doubleheader

Not a good day for Team 3 of the 89ers. The Braunschweig team returned from Hanover with two bitter defeats under their belt. After eight wins in a row, the setback hopefully came at the right time…

With ups and downs: Fossy in the 1st game

“We went to Hanover to win both games. But unfortunately it’s not that easy in the association league,” said interim coach Flik after the defeat. A poor batting performance combined with many errors that the Regents forced through their good batting performance could be the summary of both games.

Pitcher Normen Elker didn’t get off to a good start. The Regents hit his pitches aggressively, found gaps too often and also took advantage of mistakes in defense. Six hits and two errors in the first two innings alone gave the hosts a clear 5:1 lead. Then Fossy found his way into the game better and managed five strikeouts in the next two innings, but allowed another run after two more errors. Now that the offense was finally playing better, the 89ers were able to shorten the lead to 4:6 after the fourth inning.

But the mistakes in defense didn’t stop, so that in the fifth inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Fossy, somewhat frustrated, vacated the mound for Sumo. It was not an easy and thankless task. But Sumo stayed cool and only allowed one more run (4:9). Unfortunately, the offense was still struggling. In the fifth and sixth innings, only one run was added, while the Regents scored four more runs (11:5).

Neither the Rally Caps nor Yobu could help the 89ers in Hanover.

The comeback in the seventh inning with five runs came too late. In the end, the Regents won 13:10. Although morale was good, the batting performance was poor and eight (!) errors are simply too many.

So at least a split was needed. The second game developed into a high-class battle in which both pitchers, Buschi for the 89ers and Conny Kast for the Regents, dominated. “Here too, some of us were too hesitant to hit,” said Coach Flik. Added to this was an unfortunately very wandering strike zone and some unfortunate calls from the head ump from the 89ers’ point of view. “But that can’t be an excuse. We have to get used to it. We have to work on it,” Flik continued.

Kast was good, managed eight strikeouts – but he was not unbeatable. Only Flik (2 out of 4) and Pete (3 out of 4) held up well. The 89ers had five zeros on the scoreboard, while the Regents scored one run each in the first two innings. “Buschi was really good today. It’s all the more annoying that we were so weak in offense again,” Flik praised his pitcher.

It wasn’t until the sixth inning that the 89ers managed to make it 1:2 through Brendan Arey. But Hanover immediately countered and scored another unearned run (1:3). There were still ten minutes left on the clock and the 89ers went to bat one last time. Leadoff Ole got on base with his first hit in the second game. Danilo then vented his frustration about his poor at bat and thundered the ball over the fence to tie the game. What jubilation from the 89ers (3:3, no outs). And the next batter (Buschi) also got on base with a hit. But unfortunately the next three 89ers were outed. So the Regents went to bat one more time and managed the walkoff run for a 4:3 victory.

A defeat that was absolutely avoidable, as was the case in the first game. Now we need to gather all our strength and concentration on the next match day (June 30th in Hänigsen) in order to go into the summer break with at least one split.
