Team Canada Archery Team Named for Santiago 2023 Pan American Games

TORONTO (October 2, 2023) – Archery Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee have announced the Canadian Archery Team named to compete at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Here are the Team Canada archery athletes for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games:

Athletes

Recurve bow
Stephanie Barrett (Newmarket, ON)
Virginie Chénier (Laval, QC)
Crispin Duenas (Scarborough, ON)
Amelia Gagne (Peterborough, ON)
Eric Peters (Kitchener, ON)
Brandon Xuereb (Laval, QC)

Compound bow
Andrew Fagan (Baltimore, ON)
Tristan Moran (Prince Albert, SK)

At the 2022 Pan American Championships, Canada has qualified a full recurve contingent of three men and three women, in addition to two entries in men’s compound archery, a discipline that was offered to the IOC for addition to the Los Angeles Olympic Games program in 2028. Eric Peters’ appointment to the Pan American Games team is a direct result of the silver medal he won at the Pan American Championships. world archery competitions which were contested this year in Berlin, Germany. The remaining five recurve athletes were named to Team Canada based on their performances at a selection camp held in mid-September.

Eric Peters will be at his second Pan American Games at Santiago 2023. At Lima 2019, he won bronze in men’s recurve after losing to teammate Crispin Duenas in the semi-finals. He also won gold in the men’s team recurve event with Duenas and Brian Maxwell. Peters made history at the 2023 World Archery Championships when his silver medal was Canada’s best ever result at the Worlds in the men’s individual recurve bow event. This result allowed Canada to obtain an Olympic quota place in this discipline for the Paris 2024 Games.

Duenas has extensive multi-sport Games experience, this being his fifth Pan American Games. At his first Pan American Games, Rio 2007, Duenas was part of the team that won silver in the team event. He would go on to win three more medals at the Pan American Games – silver in men’s individual recurve in Guadalajara in 2011 and gold in men’s individual recurve as well as team recurve in Lima in 2019. The four-time Olympian recorded the best Olympic result of his career at the Tokyo 2020 Games, reaching the round of 16 for Canada’s best result in an Olympic archery tournament since the 1976 Montreal Games.

“I am honored to represent Canada for the fifth time at the Pan American Games,” said Duenas. It’s always exciting to participate in games where there are not just archers, but hundreds of athletes sharing the same mentality. A lot has changed since the last Pan American Games, but I’m still motivated! »

At Tokyo 2020, Duenas competed in the first Olympic mixed team archery event alongside Stephanie Barrett, who will also represent Canada at Santiago 2023. Barrett competed in her first Olympic Games after taking second place in the Olympic Continental Qualifiers in March 2021 in Monterrey, Mexico.

On the women’s side, Team Canada brings together athletes who have a high level of experience internationally and within the development pathway. Virginie Chénier has been a member of Archery Canada’s national team since 2008. Barrett and Chénier were both part of the women’s squad that earned three quota spots at last year’s Pan American Championships, earning bronze in the team event. The Santiago 2023 Games will allow Amelia Gagne to make her debut with the senior team. Gagne has been part of Archery Canada’s NextGen program since joining in 2019 under former coach Joan McDonald.

“I’m super excited to be part of the Pan American Games team. It’s one of my favorite competitions, mainly because of life in the Village and the team spirit that exists between Canadian athletes from all sports, said Chénier. We did really well at the Pan American Championships last year and I am confident in our ability to perform well at these Games, both as a team and individually, especially after the strong results we achieved this season. »

This will be the second time that compound events will be contested at the Pan American Games. Like Peters, Andrew Fagan qualified directly for the Pan American Games when he finished ninth at the World Archery Championships earlier this year. Tristan Moran earned his nomination based on his national ranking in 2023.

“I’m really looking forward to the Pan American Games. My last multi-sport competition was 13 years ago at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, said Fagan. I was a bit surprised to be selected after finishing ninth at the World Championships this year in Germany. I hope to give a good performance and show the same level of competitiveness there. I’m looking forward to shooting alongside Tristan, who is a classy person, I know that having competed with and against him for years. »

Both Fagan and Moran will be at their first Pan American Games at Santiago 2023, but they are no strangers to international competitions. Moran, a 2017 World Youth Championship medalist, and Fagan, a medalist on the World Cup circuit, continue to be active members of the Canadian national team.

Santiago 2023 provides direct qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the mixed team recurve event, as well as in the individual recurve events for men and women. The highest-ranked duo in the mixed team event will earn one men’s quota place and one women’s quota place for their NOC. In individual events, the top two athletes of each gender from different NOCs will earn quota places for their country, provided that the NOC has not already bagged a quota place for that gender.

The archery events will take place from November 1 to 5 (days 12 to 16) at the Centro de Tiro con Arco.

“Team Canada archers, prepare to show off your precision and skill at these Games,” said Christine Girard, Team Canada Chef de Mission for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. “I am delighted to have the privilege of seeing you brandish your bows with determination, release the string with confidence and let your arrows carry the spirit of your unwavering quest for excellence! »
