The last two Opens that Teddy Riner won were then called “World Cups”: it was in Lisbon in 2010 then 2012. Twelve years later, the three-time French Olympic champion took part in what is now called a Continental Open . Direction Marrakech and Morocco for the 2023 world champion who wins after three fights, respectively against the Moroccan Anass Refhraoui, the French Tieman Diaby – reigning French champion – and the Cameroonian Daniel Mepoui Anong in the final. A competition which allows the tricolor colossus to take 100 points in the Olympic ranking list and thus come back to only seventy points behind the Japanese Tatsuru Saito.
If Teddy Riner were to participate in another Continental Open and win it, he will then pass Saito in the ranking list and would fall into the Olympic quarter of the Tajik Temur Rakhimov, leaving Tatsuru Saito to explain himself – possibly – with the Russian Inal Tasoev in the quarter-final.
An Open with 143 participants where the French won six titles, in addition to that of King Teddy: among the women, Cloé Devictor (-57kg, FLAM 91), Florine Soula (-70kg, Racing Club de France Judo), Liz N’Gelebeya ( -78kg, Racing Club de France) are on the first step of the podium. Among the men, Seima Louette (-66kg, FLAM 91), Benjamin Axus (-73kg, AJA Paris XX) and Francis Damier (-100kg, FLAM 91) also make the Marseillaise resonate.
