Teenage Judo Prodigy Earns Black Belt at 14: An Interview with Anaïs Chouadra

Last September, the Audun-le-Roman judo club awarded its black belt to 16-year-old Mathis Charlier. This Friday, June 21, it was Anaïs Chouadra’s turn to receive it, at only 14 years old. “What is quite exceptional, young people generally receive it at 15 years old. Anaïs will therefore have to wait a year before being able to wear it,” points out Jean-Michel Peporté, president of the club. This did not prevent a small ceremony from being organized to mark the occasion.

A “family sport”

The opportunity to question Anaïs about her journey as a judoka. She started at the age of 4, awake, with the certainty that it was this sport that she loved, and not any other. A choice that seems obvious to him: “it’s a family sport, all my uncles practice it”. She continues in this way assiduously, passes the different grades, and here she is, ten years later, without an ounce of weariness, still just as addicted to the tatami. “The atmosphere here is family, and it’s a sport that allows you to detach yourself from everything.” During her participation in the last French Espoir championships, she collected enough points to reach a new milestone: black belt.

Between sport and school

To do this, she had to validate the 4 technical UVs, including a certain level of technique and training, a refereeing course, and involvement in her club. “It was very quick, I passed it in one season. Usually, it takes longer,” she notes. Especially since the young girl juggles her life as an athlete and as a schoolgirl. “In the evening, after class, I do my homework, then I go to judo, about 3 to 4 times a week. And at the same time, I do muscle strengthening and piano lessons.” Her goal is not to become a judo teacher, or even to work in sport. However, her goals do not stop there. “Getting my black belt was important, but I’m aiming for 1st Dan.”
