Telekom Baskets Bonn Leading the Way with New Signings in Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga

No other team in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga is as far along in terms of transfers as the Telekom Baskets Bonn. The 2023 Champions League winners have just presented their sixth new signing.

What is striking is that coach Roel Moors (45) is relying primarily on “rookies” – i.e. professionals who have not yet played in Europe or the BBL – for his second season at Hardtberg.

The best example of this is Angelo Allegri (25). After college, the American with an Italian name tried his hand at the G-League for one season in the farm team of NBA club Charlotte Hornets. Now he is leaving the United States for the first time and putting on the magenta jersey.

“Gelo is very versatile,” says Moors of the 6’7″ athlete from Kansas City. “He has the body of a wing player, but the skills of a guard. He is a good shooter and can also create for his teammates out of the pick-and-roll.”

Rivaldo Soares (24, comes directly from the University of Oklahoma), point guard Darius McGhee (25, G-League) and talented Janne Müller (17, from the club’s own youth team) are also “newbies”. Only Jonathan Bähre (27, comes from Ludwigsburg) and Lars Thiemann (24, 10 appearances in the past season) have BBL experience.

The reason for the Bonn poker: Because most teams in the bidding war with European competitors cannot afford finished professionals from overseas, they are looking for players with development potential who want to use the BBL as a springboard – and hope that they will succeed.

During his time at Bamberg Baskets and BG Göttingen, Moors already demonstrated a keen nose for talent and creative scouting.

Frankfurt starts project to avoid relegation

The Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt have started to build the team that will be able to avoid relegation next season. The second newcomer to the only promoted team is BBL-experienced Christoph Philipps (25/120 games).

The winger comes from relegated Tigers Tübingen (contract until 2026). Previously, “Chrissie” had made a name for himself as a solid defender at Ratiopharm Ulm and Veolia Towers Hamburg. Coach Dennis Wucherer (51): “He brings a well-rounded package both physically and technically, which makes him extremely interesting as a player for the Bundesliga.”

The other new player is an old acquaintance: Garai Zeeb (27). After five years away, the development player is returning. Of all teams, he is from the Karlsruhe Lions, who stole the second division championship from Frankfurt in the (meaningless) ProA final!

Wucherer: “It’s always nice when players return to the club where they spent a large part of their early development. With his qualities as a builder, Garai has been one of the strongest ProA Germans in his position in recent years and has also matured enormously as a personality over the years.”

Heidelberg brought in foreign ring protector

Now it has happened! Heidelberg’s new coach Danny Jansson (44) has signed the first player he has NOT trained YET. His name: Osun Osunniyi (25/USA).

The “Big Man” (2.08 meters) comes from the Belgian cup winner Limburg United and has so far distinguished himself as a defensive bulwark. Alex Vogel, Sports Director of the MLP Academics: “Osun was our dream player in the center position from the start. He should be our anchor in defense. He is very variable defensively in the pick-and-roll and a real rim protector. He still has a lot of potential in attack.”
