Tennis report: Djokovic undergoes knee surgery – likely out of Wimbledon

After missing out on defending his title in Paris, the tennis star will most likely miss the grass court classic in London. His Olympic start depends on how his knee reacts to the operation.
According to a media report, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic underwent meniscus surgery in Paris this morning after being forced out of the French Open due to injury. The French newspaper “L’Équipe” reported this without citing any specific sources.
Accordingly, the 24-time Grand Slam tournament winner will have to take a three-week break and will probably miss the grass court classic in Wimbledon from July 1 to 14.
Whether the 37-year-old will be able to compete in the subsequent Olympic tennis tournament in Paris starting on July 27th depends on how his knee reacts to the operation, wrote “L’Équipe”. The sports portal of the Serbian news television channel N1 later reported that the arthroscopy went well. It did not reveal any serious meniscus injury.
Djokovic loses lead in world rankings
Djokovic had cancelled his start for the quarter-final match against Norwegian Casper Ruud on Tuesday because he had torn the inner meniscus in his right knee in the previous round. By withdrawing from the tournament, the defending champion will lose his lead in the world rankings to Italian Jannik Sinner next week.
Djokovic wrote on Instagram that he “played with all his heart” and “gave everything” in his round of 16 match. After careful consideration, however, he had to make this “difficult decision”. “I wish all the players competing this week the best of luck and thank the incredible fans for all their love and continued support.”
