At the team bosses’ press conference on the sidelines of the Austrian GP in Spielberg, Horner had made clear statements to the Silver Arrows, urging them to stop trying to woo Verstappen.
The Mercedes approach was a “tactic,” said the RB team boss, to distract from their own problems. “You have to ask yourself what the motives behind it are.” Horner later added: “If he wants a Verstappen, then Jos [Vater von Max Verstappen; Anm.d.Red.] probably available.”
Wolff’s reaction was not long in coming. “I didn’t hear that at all. That’s just stupid. He’s just talking nonsense,” the Austrian told Sky.
A Verstappen change would not be up for debate anyway, as the Silver Arrows currently do not have a competitive package on offer with which the Dutchman could fight for the title. “The most important thing is that we look at our performance. If we have a fast car, then fast drivers also want to drive for us. But we have to improve. Then we will also be a good haven for a Max Verstappen. But at the moment we are not fast enough,” said Wolff.
