The Anatomy of a Political Hoax: The Fake Episode in the Valencian Community

Without a doubt, the most striking thing about the political week in the Valencian Community has been the fake episode suffered personally by the mayor of Valencia. In my opinion, the control of the tactical performance carried out by María José Catalá – obtaining advantage of the attack – after the symphonic offensive of the left towards her for her words about the Pride Day flags is worth highlighting .

In the Kihon (fundamentals) of judo, the optimization of aggression is precisely included as a basic premise because the inherent force of the action suffered can be used for definitive advantages. The “anatomy of the hoax” – in the perfect definition of Luis Casal and Dani Valero in El Español – defines the work system of a certain left that, through the manipulation of the mayor’s words about flags and international days, the editing of the same, the reductionism of the analysis, the intervention of local politicians first and then national ones – such as Iñigo Errejón and Reyes Maroto – and the consensual and organized action of the media terminals and progressive pseudo-media together with the infantry of the networks, has managed to make a dent in the reputation of the mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá. Catalá – who did not choose the right time or place to speak out like this – is neither a homophobe nor does she equate homosexuality with illness, but it has seemed that way as a consequence of the contamination of the environment. The mayor was being attacked for something she never said.

The PP’s response, immediate in this case, has managed – unlike on other occasions – to cauterize the wound in time and return the blow with greater damage than received – taking advantage of force. To shut some mouths, the first in the defensive strategy was Carlos Mazón the same night in question, live and on El Faro de La 8, when he laid bare the arguments of the opposition used to attack the mayor. He repeated the same arguments the next day in parliament. In the television interview, the Most Honorable was generous in his analysis and had something for everyone: his own party, the opposition, the institutions and their leaders and the Government of Spain.

The hot summer of Mazón

Carlos Mazón faces a hot summer and his short holidays – if he can enjoy them – will be spent in one of the 104 cities or islands that can be reached by direct flight from Manises airport or the 138 towns and islands that can be landed in without stops from the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández aerodrome. Only in this way will he be able to respond with the necessary urgency and a lightning return in the event that his WhatsApp lights up with more alarm than necessary due to a warning from the regional fire minister, Elisa Núñez.

Without a doubt, his great challenge for the coming months is to manage the brushstrokes of “verité” politics that his partner occasionally gifts him with, although the truth is that the Valencian version of Vox is more sweetened than the “gran reserva” that Abascal’s party serves in other latitudes. Managing a team with 3 players that you have not selected – now that Spain is strolling through the Eurocup – is complicated, even more so if they climb into the cultural battle, set their narrative on issues of gender, immigration or crime and orient their azimuth towards Madrid.

Mazón is a leader who is used to tightrope walking, that is what happens when he is in the middle of the table, trying to “convince those who will never vote for me”. He does not shy away from the commitment to respond to questions such as those of Valencian public television, admitting that his recipe for À punt -or whatever they are going to rename it- is “to make it visible”. I would recommend that he be cautious with regard to the expectations of the audience’s response to the possible changes he introduces in the public entity. Television is not an exact science, nor is it going to be invented now, nor will it have much help, but this is a subject that deserves a separate in-depth discussion.

Being president of all, as he intends, should not mean keeping in their positions and perks those who have demonstrated for a year high doses of ideologization and no adaptation to change. At this time, public officials from the Botànic who have not demonstrated sufficient professional solvency to hold on to the position are still hiding in positions of responsibility. The words he dedicated, furthermore, to a convalescent Diana Morant – it was he who invited her to a first meeting, the socialist leader never requested it – reflects the character of someone who truly believes in the pact regardless of the acronym and even if only by tactical spirit, and that certainly unsettles his adversaries. The tightrope walker, then, faces a high-voltage summer.
