The Belgian Cats Dominate China in Olympic Preparation Tournament Opener

The Belgian Cats, the national women’s basketball team, beat China 78-63 in their first game of the tournament held in Kortrijk in preparation for the Paris Olympic Games, on Friday at the Lange Munte.

Belgium, the reigning European champion and sixth-ranked nation in the world, trailed 20-22 after the first quarter before taking the lead in the second (40-29 at half-time). They extended their lead to 60-43 at the end of the third quarter and kept their opponents at a safe distance until the end of the game.

Against China, vice-world champion and second nation in the world, Rachid Meziane’s players began the home stretch of their preparation for the Paris Olympic Games. The Belgians will meet Serbia again on Sunday in this tournament. They will then face Spain (12/7) and Canada (14/7) in Charleroi. They will finally head to Reims, to challenge China and Japan on July 19 and 21.

At the Olympic Games, the Belgian Cats will challenge Germany (July 29), the United States (August 1) and Japan (August 4) in the difficult Group C. The top two in each of the three groups and the two best third-placed teams will advance to the quarter-finals.

Rachid Meziane has preselected 14 players and must restrict his group to 12 players by the Olympic tournament.
