Henry Ford revolutionized the automobile industry in the first half of the 20th century with his vision of mass production. Dividing tasks, better rationalizing work and maintaining a constant manufacturing pace were some of his postulates. The Business Race across the estuary is also a different challenge, as was the proposal from the North American industrialist at the time, which is clearly on the rise. In its six years of life, in fact, this event has not stopped growing until it has become a spring classic that also has charitable purposes, since four euros per group goes to the Bizkaia Food Bank.

The camaraderie in the workplace is transferred to athletics along 7.7 kilometers above any record. The race, organized by EL CORREO and CEBEK, in addition to the invaluable collaboration of Banco Santander, the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium, KAEFER, Coca Cola and BM Bizkaia, has once again greatly broken the participation record this Sunday with a total of 186 registered entities and 1,876 runners at the starting line, divided into 262 mixed teams, 175 men’s and 32 women’s.

The banks of the Nervión, with overcast skies that benefited the march – at times the sun smiled on the athletes – were once again the perfect setting to enjoy a “different” morning in which there were also reunions and hugs in the run-up to athletes from different parts of the Basque geography who had not seen each other for a long time. In the run-up to the departure – this time it took place at 11:00 a.m. from the Evaristo Churruca Pier – the participating groups took the opportunity to take a family photo at the photocall before focusing on sports with the inevitable stretches to warm up their engines in the around the Maritime Museum. The Itsasmuseum once again served as the nerve center and goal. The Red Cross post, the podium and the tent were located there to offer massages to those who requested them after the effort.

Family, friends and coworkers were also successful in cheering on the participants in a race with a company seal in which the time is set by the last of the quartet. And the rules establish that teams, made up of workers from the same firm, have a maximum difference at the finish line of 8 seconds between the first and last member. Coordination, therefore, is one of the keys to not being left out of the game. The most experienced and strongest are in charge of pulling the rest, but without escaping because everyone must endure the cadence of the leaders. Chain work until reaching the goal.

After starting from the Evaristo Churruca Pier, the circuit continued through Abandoibarra and Paseo de Uribitarte in the first section. The return to the finish line was via the Town Hall bridge, Campo Volantín, Avenida de las Universidades, Ribera de Botica Vieja, Euskalduna bridge and finally return to the starting point, the Maritime Museum.

clear winners

And already from the starting flag it could be seen that the two teams presented by the Ertzaintza had many numbers to fight for victory. They had climbed to the top of the podium twice in this Business Race along the estuary and after finishing second last year they wanted to taste the joys of victory again. And they also achieved it twice.

Although some of its members had competed in another race the day before, they set a devilish pace from the start. Only the ITP Aero team, ultimately third overall, barely managed to stay in its wake. But after the first kilometer there was no way to follow them and they were left alone in the lead.

The Ertzaintza 1 quartet opened a small gap with respect to their teammates but, in view of their victory, it was not in danger – the third party gave up a lot of time – they decided to take their foot off the accelerator and wait to be caught up by the members of Ertzaintza 2 on the Bridge of Euskaduna and crossed the finish line practically at the same time –two seconds apart– –28.42 and 28.44–, while ITP Aero set a time of 29.27.

In women, the victory went to Eroski with overwhelming authority ahead of Arteche, while the mixed event was won by the Guipuzcoan team from Orona, ahead of Aceros Olarra.
