The Boston Celtics are one step away from winning their eighteenth ring. With last night’s victory in Dallas, 99-106, they win the third game of the Finals in a row (3-0). The next meeting, on the night of Friday to Saturday, could be the definitive one and put an end to the season in the NBA. Despite not being able to count on Kristaps Porzingis, Jayson Tatum, with 31, and Jaylen Brown (30) beat a very unfortunate Dallas Mavericks. On one of the worst nights for Luka Doncic, who ended the game expelled for fouls, Kyrie Irving was the only one of the Texans who showed any pride. With the chip changed after two disastrous first games, he finished with 35 points that were not enough against the Celtics who were much superior.

During the first half you could see some very energetic Mavericks. They came out in a rush, setting a great pace from the first moment, where Irving and Doncic were very successful. This was the Kyrie Irving that Mr. Lebron James had named as the greatest talent in history. The Slovenian, with 13 points, was the only quarter where he went. In this first period the Texans also achieved the largest advantage over Boston in the entire Finals, with a +11.

Despite the errors in the three-pointers, the Celtics managed to stay in the game. From the hand of a Tatum who at times looked like the true franchise player. Like Irving, the oxygen from Texas also benefited Tatum who in all the Finals had been the second or third sword of his team, finishing with 20 points at halftime. Before the intermission, Mazzulla’s team closed the gap without much effort, with their elbow resting on the window.

After the break, the perfect storm in Boston

Up to this point the match had been really even. However, as soon as the Celtics pressed the accelerator a little, the real distance between the two teams was seen. With a pounding, constant rhythm, leaving you behind when you get distracted for a moment. It was Jaylen Brown’s turn, who dominated both parts of the court, with 15 points and great defense on Doncic, exhausted at this point in the game. Brown with a dunk as a sentence, left the Mavs very touched, almost asking for the hour. Boston closed the third period with the largest difference of the game, +21.

The last quarter was the one of honor for Dallas. With Dallas legends like Dirk Nowitzki and Emmit Smith in the stands, the Mavericks showed pride and bravery. In a miraculous 20-2 run in just 5 minutes of the quarter, they managed to get within three points of the Celtics. PJ Washington appeared in the entire Finals for the first time, and Kyrie Irving took on the star mantle that Doncic had left behind. The Slovenian, very frustrated, ended the disastrous match with several poor decisions in attack and two infractions that sentenced him. When they needed him most, he ended up sent off for fouls and totally desperate. The Mavericks had several opportunities to finish the comeback, but they did not take advantage of the shots and it finally came to nothing.

The Celtics get a third victory and practically have the ring in their hands. Nobody in history has managed to come back from 3-0 down. The closest thing was the 3-1 that Lebron James and his Cavaliers came back from in 2016 to Stephen Curry’s Warriors. On a night where the league was mourning the death of Jerry West, the Celtics only have one more left to equal the Lakers in the NBA logo in championships.
