The comparison portal Check24 excited many people by giving away five million jerseys. However, consumer advocates warned against the offer.

Munich – The German national team is fighting at the European Football Championship 2024 in their own country for the title. Check24 launched the free jersey campaign even before the European Championship in Germany. The comparison portal sparked a lot of discussion on social media.

The comparison portal Check24 caused a stir when it offered free jerseys for the European Football Championship. Anyone who wants to buy a DFB jersey usually has to pay at least 100 euros. Many people were therefore curious about Check24’s offer. Many people consider this campaign to be one of the most significant marketing successes of all time, even though it involved considerable expenditure. Check24 is said to have invested around 100 million euros in it. The reward was not long in coming: the app has been topping the charts in the App Store for weeks.

You could get the jersey simply by taking part in the Check24 betting game. But a spokeswoman for the consumer advice center expressed concerns: “The jersey isn’t really free, of course, you pay with your data.” There was a heated debate on social media about whether the benefits outweighed the significant disadvantages. There were countless comments on this topic, especially on Facebook, with many people being enthusiastic about the jersey.

“It’s a great campaign” – Facebook users enthusiastic about the jersey despite criticism

On Facebook, many users did not seem particularly bothered by Check24 collecting data. One user said: “Data is collected everywhere. Not everyone has the money for a jersey from DFB.” Another comment read: “Don’t let anyone put you off the shirt. It’s a great campaign by Puma and Check24.” He also stressed that you have to give your data everywhere you shop online anyway: “I don’t understand the fuss about it.”

Many people said that no one should be surprised if they got a free jersey through Check24. “The main goal of the providers of almost every competition is to get data as easily as possible. You have to confirm everything, so you shouldn’t be surprised afterwards.” It seemed as if hardly anyone was bothered by the data collection by the comparison portal. “They’ve had my data for a long time anyway, because I compare almost all the prices there,” was one opinion – often expressed in a similar way.

None of the users on Facebook were really surprised about Check24 collecting data. Unlike others, however, some users had concerns. “I wonder if there are other people who realize that Check24 made the most profit from selling data,” one commenter noted. Others expressed similar views. “Data is the new gold. Check24 is doing this very cleverly,” read one comment. (rd)
