Terrible pileup in the Dauphiné Liberé. With 21 kilometers left in the fifth stage and with the asphalt wet, the road became a real skating rink. The cyclists fell one after another like dominoes. They couldn’t stay on the bike and were slipping. The war report was devastating: more than 30 fell to the ground.

Among those involved in the fall were Mikel Landa, Primoz Roglic, Remco Evenepoel, Juan Ayuso, among others. Apparently, they did not have serious injuries, as they continued in the race, which was neutralized until the finish line without a winner. The worst injured in the fall were Dylan Van Baarle and Steven Kruijswijk, both from Team Visma, who had to leave in an ambulance.

Many of the cyclists were left lying on the road while those who saved the fall waited for their companions to recover. Given the large number of runners involved in the pile-up, the health services could not cope. For this reason, the race had to be paralyzed for a few minutes, since every race must have at least one ambulance to be held safely.

Finally, the race organization chose to neutralize the race to the finish line. At the time the accident occurred, two cyclists (Le Berre and Bayer) were escaping with just under a minute ahead of the peloton. Despite enjoying that difference, the stage will remain without a winner.

What happened this Thursday in Dauphiné is reminiscent of what happened a few months ago in Itzulia, in which a dozen cyclists were involved in a fall. The ambulances evacuated several of the runners, so the race was left without medical assistance. At that time, only the escapees competed in the stage, while the peloton was neutralized until the finish line.
