Since last June 20, the Copa América opened its doors so that the continent’s teams will begin to play in the oldest tournament in the world, which for the United States 2024 edition had a new rule that was applied, for the first time, in the game between Brazil and Costa Rica played last Monday, June 24.

The rule, known as the pink card, was established by Conmebol with the aim of allowing teams to make a sixth substitution during matches in situations where the player has a concussion or injuries due to head trauma. This is precisely what happened in the debut between the Ticos and Verdeamarela.

The team led by Gustavo Alfaro was the protagonist of this event because midfielder Jefferson Brenes suffered an injury that prevented him from continuing on the field. Given this, the strategist, aware of the rule, informed the arbitration panel that subsequently leaves a record of the change in the report.

It is worth mentioning that although a pink card is not shown as such, any coach can make the decision and together with the designated referees the change will be authorized, as happened in the game that ended in a goalless tie.

In the 63rd minute this modification was made, giving way to Alejandro Bran, who entered the field of play to replace his teammate due to a suspected concussion.

According to what was reported by Conmebol, “substitution due to concussion may be carried out regardless of the number of substitutions made until the moment it occurs.”

In addition, they also add that: “If a normal substitution were made at the same time as a concussion substitution, a substitution opportunity will be deducted. In addition, the team making the concussion substitution will automatically have the ability to make an additional substitution.”
