The first days of judgment of this European Championship are arriving. Today, the final round of matches in Group A marks the start of a four-day series in which it becomes clear which countries qualify for the round of 16 and which countries can pack their bags.

How does a country qualify for the round of 16?

The numbers 1 and 2 from the six groups go to the eighth finals of the European Championship. That’s twelve teams. The four best numbers 3 from all groups will also continue, so that the necessary sixteen teams can start the round of 16.

The Dutch team is almost through with four points. How is that possible?

Things must be crazy if the Netherlands wants to be eliminated in the group stage. The Dutch already have four points and even if the Netherlands loses to Austria on Tuesday, there is a good chance that the Dutch will continue as one of the best numbers three anyway.

In the event of a big loss against Austria, the Dutch team must look at what happens in other groups in the last round of the group phase.

There is a chance that the Netherlands will be certain of the eighth finals on Monday evening. If the numbers three in group A and group B finish on less than four points on Monday evening, the Dutch team will be certain of the knockout phase without playing.

If Scotland does not win against Hungary in group A on Sunday evening and Albania does not win against Spain on Monday evening, the Netherlands will already be in the eighth finals.

Who will be the Netherlands’ opponent in the eighth finals?

It is still difficult to say which country the Dutch team will encounter first in the knockout phase. It is of course clear to which group the Netherlands can be linked.

If the Dutch finish in first place, the number two of group F will be the next opponent on July 2 in Leipzig. There is a good chance that the Dutch team will then meet the Czech Republic or Turkey.

If the Dutch team finishes in second place, the number two in group E will be the next opponent on July 1 in Düsseldorf. Romania, Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia all now have three points in group E.

If the Dutch team finishes in third place, the winner of group B, group C or group E is the opponent. There is a good chance that it will be Spain (group B) or England (group C).

A lot can become clear about the fate of the Netherlands on Monday evening after the matches from group B. Next Wednesday the entire group stage will be over and the knockout schedule will be fully completed.
