The European Parliament: Responsibilities, Operations, and Elections

This Sunday, June 9, 2024, the elections for the European Parliament end, which is made up of 720 representatives who are renewed every five years.

This institution has legislative, budgetary and supervisory responsibilities in the bloc made up of 27 member countries. Some of them are:

  • Decide on international agreements.
  • Review citizen requests and conduct investigations.
  • Electoral observation.
  • Establish the budget of the European Union together with the council of the European Union.

The number of deputies in the European Parliament varies according to the population, but with decreasing proportionality. That is, a representative from a large country represents more people than one from a small country.

In that sense, no country can have less than six or more than 96 representatives, while the total number of members cannot exceed 750, including the president.

It should be remembered that members of the European Parliament are grouped by political similarities, not by countries of origin, in accordance with the official site of parliament.

How does the European Parliament work?

The European Parliament has two main stages of operation:

  • In the Commissions is where legislation is prepared. This body has 20 commissions and 3 subcommittees. They examine proposed laws, while deputies can present modifications or rejection of a bill.
  • It is in the plenary sessions that new laws are approved. Sessions are generally held in Strasbourg, France, for four days a month, although additional sessions may also be held in Brussels, Belgium.

How to vote for members of the European Parliament?

The election of deputies to the European Parliament varies according to each country, although they are governed by the electoral laws and traditions of each European State. For example, in Spain it is possible to vote by mail or go to a polling station in accordance with the electoral census.

Even Spanish citizens can vote from abroad, by registering at the Spanish Embassy in the country of residence, which will process the registration for the electoral roll.
