The Fighter: The Journey of Clarisse Agbegnenou to Olympic Glory

A fighter from birth

“I was born 2 months early, I am what we call a premature baby. But, I was born so early that the doctors weren’t sure they could save me », says Clarisse Agbegnenou. Despite a very weak kidney and 7 days of coma, the very little Clarisse wins her first fight: she survives. Her doctors then baptized her “the fighter”.

A great champion…

Not very tall, but wanting to stand out among her 3 brothers, Clarisse Agbegnenou started judo at the age of 9. And very quickly, nothing stops him: his adversaries never have the last word. His new nickname becomes “the bulldozer”!
Today, the Frenchwoman is 6 times world champion, 5 times European champion and once Olympic champion in Tokyo in 2021.

…which still needs to progress

However, on May 21, at the World Judo Championships in Abu Dhabi, in the Middle East, Clarisse didn’t manage to put gold on her kimono. In her under 63 kg category, she settled for the bronze medal.

A calm mother before the Olympics

Is she worried about this result a few weeks before the Paris Games? She answers : ” No, but I will be even more vigilant so as not to be stupidly surprised…”.
And Clarisse confides that she hopes “ resist all pressures thanks to my 2 year old granddaughter, Athena, who will be my first supporter on the edge of the tatami.”
