The Golden Boy 2024: Top Contenders Revealed for Prestigious Football Award

The Golden Boy award has a long tradition. Since 2003, the Italian sports magazine ‘Tuttosport’ has chosen Europe’s greatest football talent every year. The first winner was Rafael van der Vaart. Many later world stars were also able to win the trophy at the beginning of their careers: Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are just a few of them.

The current title holder is Jude Bellingham, who played brilliantly for both Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid last year and won the Champions League with the Royals last Saturday. Tuttosport has now published this year’s list of 100 nominees who could succeed the Englishman. Previous winners cannot be awarded again. Mario Götze was the only top German talent to receive the award in 2011.

Decision in October

Based on the performance of all U20 players in Europe between October 2023 and March 2024, a so-called Football Benchmark Index was created. The 100 best were nominated for the Golden Boy. The ranking will be updated every four weeks until October. The list will be reduced by 20 places each time. At the end, a jury will select the Golden Boy 2024 from the 20 remaining players.

Among the top 100 players are nine professionals who were under contract in the Bundesliga last season. Since the age limit for nomination is 20, top talents such as Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are no longer included this year. Aleksandar Pavlovic, Mathys Tel and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens have a chance of winning the title:
