The History of the Veracruz Carnival: From the First Queen to Present Day with Yuri as Main Representative

On June 26, the Veracruz Carnival will begin, the most important party in the entity and which for this 2024 edition will have the singer Yuri as its main representative.

The Carnival festivities have a history of almost 100 years; Over time they have evolved but they maintain that peculiarity of having a Royal Court that they crown in an eye-catching ceremony.

Who was the first queen?

In the book “The Story of a Joy” by the writer Ana María Silva Martínez, the beginnings of the activities related to the festivals of meat are described, where the names of the queens, princesses, marchionesses, ladies and even little pages are captured. .

In 1925 Lucha Reygada was chosen as the first queen of the Veracruz Carnival, who would have stood out among dozens of participants.

She was crowned on February 21, 1925 at 9:00 p.m. in the old Carrillo Puerto Theater, today known as Francisco Javier Clavijero; during her coronation there were recitals, performed in honor of her gracious majesty, the committee describes.

The prices to enter the venue were: in the Luneta area 2.10 pesos; in the first boxes they cost 12.60 pesos; second boxes 1.05 pesos; and gallery 0.55 cents.

She won the crown 71 thousand 610 votes; María Teresa Arzani came in second place with 57,382 votes; and in third place Luz Ortiz with 14,797 votes.

The notary office, run by Mr. Rafael Loperena, located on Zamora Street in the center of the city, had been in charge of purchasing and depositing votes.

“Once the coronation was over, the queen and her court left the Theater heading to their homes accompanied by a large number of students, rieleros, cadets and the general public,” it reads.

The next day (Sunday the 22nd) the activities were suspended because it was the death anniversary of Francisco I. Madero. They resumed on Monday with a water ride that began at the T pier.

The shops closed on February 23 and 24, 1925; Only some of the businesses that sold essential products offered their services for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon.
