The Importance of Training Centers in Professional Sports: A Look at the NBA and BBL Facilities

A topic that has been on my mind for a while now, at least since the topic of Alba Campus started popping up every now and then.

The absolute gold standard in this regard are the NBA training centers.
From the multimedia player lounge to the training hall with several hundred seats, kitchen, floating tank (sound and light-tight salt water tub for absolute relaxation) to a golf putting hole and altitude training chamber (for the Magic), you will find everything you could possibly dream of as an athlete.

In the BBL, of course, you are far from that.
The closest thing to this is certainly the Orange Campus.
To be honest, I don’t even know what’s in there.
I hope someone can give an overview.

The training center that has been so praised at Alba for so long consists of the hall (a court), a weight room that is, in my opinion, well laid out, a physio room, a video room and an office for the coaches.
The special thing is a video system that records virtually every movement and can be used for analysis during training (thanks to a movable smartboard) (or even streaming of test games).
However, the system is not that special because it is present at at least one college in NCAA Division 3.

In addition, Alba (and Bamberg) also have a load meter built into the pants (a small black spot on the waistband on the back). That’s why the athletic trainer always sits so intently in front of a tablet during the games. This also flows into the individual athletic training plans.

According to Wiebke Schwartau, the players are also supplied with food (I don’t know whether there are even ready-made meals for possible nutritional plans).
When you’re on the go, there are always these “pants” to help your leg muscles recover faster.
When travelling, Alba also likes to travel in first class on the train and on an adapted bus (especially with more legroom).
In the EL, the ELPA has also enforced standards regarding flying(?) and hotels (I think at least 4 stars) in order to keep the travel quality of the EL players as high as possible.

Until this season, there was also a sports psychologist employed by the men’s team.
For the women it is still Elisa Lierhaus, the men have no one special for themselves.

There is also a center in Göttingen that many people praise, but like the Orange Campus, I have no idea about the thing
What impressed me is that Würzburg has a cryo chamber in their training center. Basically ice packs all over the body (faster recovery and prevention of inflammation).
And that’s where my half-knowledge ends.

I would be very interested to hear what other clubs have to offer.

It is certainly also a factor if players have had longer breaks due to injury or are “vulnerable” and are looking at how clubs can best support them in their health.
