The League of Giants: Financial Woes Cause Teams to Shrink in Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga

The League of Giants is shrinking!

This news will cause concern among the bosses of the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga: The Hakro Merlins Crailsheim will not apply for a wildcard for the upcoming first division season. The club cannot afford the 700,000 euros required for this and will play in the Pro A (second division/ed.) next season following their relegation from the BBL.

The club explained: “In recent days, the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim have communicated their position on a potential wildcard to the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga within the scope of their financial possibilities. After the extraordinary general meeting of all BBL clubs called at short notice, it is clear that the Wizards’ ideas and the league’s financial requirements for a wildcard of €700,000 do not match. This means that one thing is certain: Together with you, the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim will start the coming season at full speed in the Barmer 2nd Basketball Bundesliga Pro A.”

The problem: Two clubs, Crailsheim and the Tübingen Tigers, are being relegated and only one wants to move up, or in other words: can afford it! On Sunday, the PS Karlsruhe Lions celebrated the ProA championship after two wins against the Frankfurt Skyliners, and had already theoretically been promoted as finalists. But Karlsruhe had already announced in mid-May that it would not be able to manage the BBL financially.

Paul Alshut, commercial director of the Lions: “We have not yet fully established the necessary structures for the first division in order to be able to manage the required minimum budget of 3.5 million euros for participation in the first division game operations.”

Losses loom: Basketball Bundesliga only with 17 teams?

Karlsruhe would have to more than double its current budget to raise the required 3.5 million euros. Too much for the club.

So two teams will be relegated and only the Frankfurt Skyliners will be promoted. The BBL is on a shrinking course! It is not expected that another club will apply for a wildcard and also meet the formal requirements such as the minimum budget.

As things stand, the BBL will only start the coming season with 17 teams. This means one less home game for all teams, which means they will lose potential income. Incidentally, the BBL already played with only 17 clubs in 2019/20 after the Nuremberg Falcons were not granted a license.
