Il Leprechaun or Irish elf – in Italian leprechaun – is the symbol of the Boston Celtics basketball team. Nice figure between myth and superstition, always represented with green clothes. When the basketball team was founded in 1946, the name Celtics was chosen in homage to the strong presence of the Irish community in Boston. At the beginning of the 1950s Zang Aurbach, brother of the legendary coach of the “Greens”, Red Auerbach, created the logo, inspired by the leprechaun with a basketball on his finger and surrounded by the team name. The stick with which he accompanies himself, the “shilleagh“, is made of blackthorn or oak wood, typical of Ireland and serves as a tool to lean on as well as a potential weapon. The owner of the Boston Garden, Mr. Walter Brown, in 1946 he was tasked with founding a team for “Beantown” (the city’s famous nickname comes from the fact that Native Americans and the first English settlers loved beans). Brown chose Celticsto strengthen the bond with the many Irish immigrants present in the city and to remember the team of Original Celtics from New York. The new Boston team founded by Brown took on the color verde, traditionally linked to Ireland. Another reference to Ireland is the shamrock which – according to legend – was also used by Saint Patrick to spread Christianity on the island. Over time the brand underwent variations and in 1950 the new logo appeared with the leprechaun named Lucky, with a big smile, a crown on his head with “NBA” written on it, a green jacket with lots of clovers, the “shillehagh” in his hand and a pipe in his mouth. In the 80s the brand was refined and better structured, more colorful and realistic: a dark green outline ring with the writing “BOSTON CELTICS” in white, with more visual impact. The leprechaun’s skin is pink, the stick and the ball (always twirled with great skill) become brown, the outline of the bowler hat, the bow tie and the vest become beige with green clovers always inside them, the trousers and shoes with large buckles turn black, the feet crossed, the pipe at the right corner of the mouth, the big smile of the leprechaun with attached wink and thick eyebrows. This logo is still in use by the franchise, and is one of the most beautiful and recognizable in the world of sport.
