The Mainz Athletics Deliver a Stunning 13-3 Victory Over League Leaders Guggenberger Legionnaires

Rehabilitation after heavy defeats: The Athletics prepare an unpleasant evening for the Guggenberger Legionnaires and give the league leaders a clear 3:13 thrashing.

Nobody really expected that. After a series of, in some cases, very heavy defeats against the Guggenberger Legionnaires, the Mainz Athletics came to Regensburg as absolute underdogs. But on Friday evening, the guests showed why they are playing really well in the Bundesliga this season.

Mainz put in a great offensive performance against Pablo Guillen and Joe Cedano de Leon, scoring more runs in one game than in the previous four games against Regensburg combined. Two really good innings were basically enough for the Athletics to really get the hosts going on a rainy evening. At the same time, Regensburg’s offense was massively slow for long stretches. A combination that is hard to win games with.

Mainz quickly takes the lead

The trouble first started in the second inning. After three singles for the Athletics, Regensburg’s starting pitcher Pablo Guillen served the first run for the guests via a walk. A Mainz double then ensured a veritable 3-0 lead.

The Legionnaires worked on that for quite a while. Regensburg made its first appearance with a home run by Eric Harms. In the fifth inning, everything seemed to be back to normal. Eric Harms and Lou Helmig scored again to tie the scores for Regensburg.

Five runs with two outs

But that was it for the Guggenberger Legionnaires’ offense. The Mainz team was completely different. They regained the lead in the seventh inning, only to really strike in the next part of the game. Joe Cedano de Leon struggled perhaps a little too long with a strikeout that was ignored by the umpire. The Mainz team took advantage of the opportunity. Instead of leaving the field with three outs, they went on a brilliant two-out rally that ended with a whopping five runs for the Athletics.

While the Regensburgers were unable to achieve anything at bat, the guests added to their lead in the final quarter. Four more runs ensured that the Legionnaires received a heavy beating in their own stadium.

On Saturday from 2 p.m., manager Martin Helmig’s team has the opportunity to put things right again and forget the unpleasant Friday evening.
