The Mannschaft never disappoints

Germany aggressive and cynical: a brave Denmark must surrender to Havertz and Musiala.

Germany-Denmarkthe second round of 16 of Euro 2024 ends with a clear victory for the hosts. A match marked by the interruption of the first half, due to a heavy hailstorm, while the teams were still studying each other, without one having prevailed over the other. It all happens in the second half and the sliding door of the match he identifies himself as Andersen, an old Dorian acquaintance. For him a goal (later cancelled) in the 50th minute and a subsequent handball committed in the 52nd minute which gave Havertz the penalty for the 1-0. He also made the mistake on Musiala on the occasion of the second goal. In short, his evening went from glorious to terrifying.

Although Germany played an excellent matchit was certainly not the best night for veterans Gündoğan and Kroos, who nevertheless held firm for more than 90 minutes. More busy controlling Eriksen’s inventions and put in difficulty by the dynamism of a rediscovered Højbjerg, the two phenomena left the spotlight to the younger Havertz, Musiala and Wirtz. And this is one of the secrets of Germany: a phenomenal mix of young and veteran players, combining exuberance and explosiveness with geometry and management.

Yet there was a moment in history when it seemed that Germany did not have the best possible generation before it. The most represented team in the history of the World Cup seemed destined for a declining phase? Not at all. The historic group composed of Neuer, Kroos, Gündoğan, Müller and Kimmich have been joined by a literally exploded Rüdiger, Havertz (who also seems to be finding a good scoring streak in the national team), some good craftsmen (Raum and Andrich above all) and some phenomenal kids from Gen Z. Generations change but the result is always the same: no matter what the competition, Germany will always be the first semi-finalist.

However, Denmark proved to be a very worthy team with some good individual players. A team well put on the field by Hjulmand, who relied on the muscles of Højbjerg and the ideas of Eriksen in midfield. The performance of the two central defenders was not good and the test of Højlund was also insufficient, still too immature to worry an old rascal like Rüdiger. Denmark, however, was a worthy opponent for Germany, who had to work harder than expected to bring home the match. One has the feeling that a cycle has ended for a generation of Danes (Schmeichel, Eriksen and Kjaer above all) but the new Vikings seem to be able to repeat the good deeds of their ancestors in the future.

Barring sensational reversals, the first quarter-final on the infernal side of the draw should be between Germany and Spain. It’s easy to talk about an early final, especially considering that these are the only two big teams that have not disappointed expectations so far. It will be a match not to be missed, with the Germans slightly favored due to the environmental conditions.
