Created in the USA in 1965, pickleball (or light tennis) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. At the crossroads of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, this new sport is much more physically accessible than tennis and can be played after a brief initiation. This week, the Tennis club ruffécois offered its members an introduction to the activity. “Very easy to set up (1), the activity is close to tennis”, says Damien Guillot, the club’s coach.

Looking for an activity to develop the club, to (re)encourage the youngest and seniors to exercise, Damien Guillot suggested to the managers that they discover pickleball. For three years, with Fabien Truteau, a PE teacher in Saint-Amant-de-Boixe, he has offered an afternoon of discovering pickleball during UNSS sessions in the North Charente sector. The middle school students quickly took to the activity. The coach then offered this activity as part of the end-of-year parent-child activities at the TCR, again with success because “parents can play with their children without suffering physically”. Finally, on May 24, during the passage of the Olympic flame, the TCR animated its stand in the Olympic village with pickleball.

For Damien Guillot, it is an opportunity to reconnect with former players who can no longer play tennis, to help current players develop but also to attract new members with an activity that is less demanding than tennis.

Highlight of the week: a discovery session alongside the start of the TCR open tournament this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. open to the general public. Activity integrated into the FFT, the objective is to offer pickleball slots within the club at the start of the school year with lessons offered by Damien Guillot.

(1) For a budget of €400 (a net, four carbon rackets a little larger than those for ping-pong and a hollow and perforated hard plastic ball) you can equip a court (as large as a third of a tennis court) without having to invest in specific infrastructure such as a paddle or squash court.
