The Rise of Will Rogers: Taking the Helm at Washington Huskies

Who are the college heirs? Will Rogers succeeds Michael Penix Jr. at the Huskies.

It was not his fault that Michael Penix Jr. made the biggest headlines during the last draft. The Atlanta Falcons chose the Washington Huskies quarterback and gave their new recruit Kirk Cousins his potential successor. Speaking of successors: The Huskies are putting the fate of their offense in the hands of Will Rogers, a new recruit from Mississippi State University.

Will Rogers played at home with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. He was born in August 2001 in Louisville, in the US state of Mississippi. During his childhood and youth, however, his heart belonged to the Ole Miss Rebels, for whose baseball team his father had played together with Archie Manning. He followed the early careers of Eli Manning and Bo Wallace and was coached in middle school by current NFL quarterback Gardner Minshew.

However, recruiting the Rebels was ruled out by mutual agreement. Rich Rodriguez, the offensive coordinator, prefers the option play and thus his focus is on using dual-threat quarterbacks. Rogers, who feels comfortable in the pocket protected by his offensive line, then decided between Mississippi State and Washington State. In the end, it was the Bulldogs, but the connection to head coach Joe Moorhead was the deciding factor.

Records at Mississippi State

Rogers played for the Bulldogs for four years, and his 2021 sophomore season was particularly memorable, as he set career highs in completions (73.9 percent), passing yards (4,739) and passing touchdowns (36 with nine interceptions). The 2022 season was also strong, but last season the Mississippi State record holder in passing yards and touchdowns was on the field in just five games. Last December, he announced his move to the Huskies.

Rogers is a pure pocket passer with experience of 40 SEC games as a starter. He shows quick reads, quickly recognizes the formation of the defense and hardly makes any turnovers. However, he also prefers to use the short and medium range with his passes, which has so far made him more of a game manager. Rogers’ chance of a late college career jump lies with head coach Jedd Fisch. But the situation in Washington is not good. Little is left of the team that was in the final of the National Championship in January, and the big talents in the skill positions are missing. If Rogers doesn’t deliver quickly anyway, a very athletic quarterback in Demond Williams is already ready to serve as his backup.
