The Riverside Shines at European Shin Kyokushin Karate Tournament, Saving Spanish National Team’s Furniture

The Riverside saved the furniture of the Spanish National Team in the European shin kyokushin karate which was held at the Luis Puig velodrome in Valencia last weekend. Shin Kyokushin karate differs from traditional karate in that the fights are very short and aggressive and is inspired by Shotokan karate, Goju Ryu, Judo, Muay Thai and Boxing.

Two members of Fighters Leo de Alzira, Hugo Cruz and Javi Zamora and one of Kotki de Carcaixent, Màxim Carrió, won the only three medals that the Spanish team achieved.

Hugo Cruz – who travels several times a week from his native Muro d’Alcoi to train in Alzira – was runner-up in Europe in the demanding 80 to 90 kg category. He alone fell against the Georgian David Mskhaladze who has accumulated several continental championships. The Albala native Javi Zamora renewed his old laurels by winning the bronze medal in the 60 to 70 kg category. The river native met in the semifinals against the one who finally became champion for the sixth time, another Georgian, Andrei Zinchenko.

Guaranteed relief

Although both have a long career ahead of them and there are many wrestlers in various clubs in the region, relief is guaranteed with the junior bronze of Carcaixentí Màxim Carrió in less than 60 kg. Màxim is the grandson of the former footballer and former coach Evaristo Carrió and it so happens that combine karate with football. He has been a striker for the UD Alzira youth C team, a club that his grandfather coached in the mid-70s. In October the three will try to get a place in Belgium for the World Cup to be held in Japan, now only reserved for the champions, who will not participate in the Central European country.

These were not the only medals that riverside karatekas achieved this weekend. The Alzira karate club returned from the Donibane trophy in Pamplona with 20 medals in the traditional mode. Sonia Almiñana, Marco Mazo, Mar Vila and Dani Estellés won gold in the kata category and Marco Mazo did a double in kumite. Rafa Vila and Blanca Villanova won the silver and Darío Peláez, Carla Vives, Sara Badía, Carlos Valentín and David Estellés, the bronze. In combat (kumite) David Estellés, Blanca Villanova, Carlos Valentín and Paula Penava reached the final while Carla Vives, Sara Badía, Darío Peláez and Dani Estellés took bronze.

This weekend, the fifteen karatekas who began playing the Kaizen League in Toledo will participate in the final day.
