German national coach Julian Nagelsmann surprisingly puts Florian Wirtz on the bench in the European Championship round of 16 against Denmark and sends Leroy Sané onto the field instead.
Nagelsmann now explains his thoughts on ZDF.

He explains: “Against Switzerland, we didn’t sprint and offer enough depth. Leroy is a player who embodies both. Flo also always has good runs, but he wants to have the ball at his feet more and then create things with two touches. Leroy offers a lot of depth because of his speed.”

But then Nagelsmann becomes very honest: “The Danes are extremely solid in the air and physically very, very good in the three-man defense. But they have problems on the ground against agile players. Leroy can bring what we were missing a little against Switzerland.”
In conclusion, the national coach said: “He trained very well. We are deciding between two world-class players. So the decision can only be a good one.”
Nagelsmann also puts left-back Maximilian Mittelstädt on the bench and brings in David Raum.

He explains: “Maxi played three good games and deserved to play today too. David was a good substitute. He brings a lot of emotion into the game, which can be very useful in the stadium. He also leads the players behind him very well. That’s why I wanted to reward him.”
