The Unfairness of Penalty Shootouts: Study Reveals Start Advantage in European Championships

The knockout phase of the European Championships is finally starting: the round of 16 begins with the match between Switzerland and Italy. This means that extra time and penalty shootouts may occur again. However, a study from England has now shown how unfair a decision on penalties actually is.

As statistician Christian Hesse explained to BILD, the team that starts the game has a 60 percent chance of winning. Researchers analyzed 1,000 penalty shootouts. “There is no other sport where the simple toss of a coin causes such a large imbalance in chances,” said the expert.

There is psychological pressure behind this. If the shooter from team A scores, the opposing team’s next shooter is put under additional pressure. According to Hesse, a solution would be a fundamental reform. “Team A shoots first, then B shoots twice, then A shoots twice,” says the expert. This format has already been used in the English League Cup.
