The Untold Story of Michael Jordan’s Fear: Hakeem Olajuwon, The African Superstar

By Adiel Kalonji | NBA Editor

In most anecdotes told about Michael Jordan, he is systematically portrayed as the executioner of his opponents. But for once, the Bulls legend was literally terrified by another legend of the 90s, according to seven-time champion Robert Horry.

As charismatic as he is talented, Michael Jordan is arguably the greatest icon in the history of basketball, or even in sports for some. But although he was admired by spectators and fans alike, the six-time champion was also a player that his opponents feared on the court. For good reason, in attack as in defense, he was uncompromising. His record reflects this well.

Because while the Bulls legend’s five regular-season MVPs are often mentioned in the debates, it should not be forgotten that he was also voted Defensive Player of the Year during the 1987-88 season. Just like him, another legend excelled offensively and terrorized on defense during the era of the backcourt’s dominance, so much so that MJ himself praised his qualities during an old interview.

The former African superstar who terrorized Michael Jordan

Hakeem Olajuwon was in the top 10 in five categories: steals, rebounds, blocks, points and shooting percentage. Usually a player his size is in the top 10 in blocked shots, but he was also in the top 10 in steals, which to me shows his versatility and the type of player he really was.

Jordan admired Hakeem Olajuwon’s talent, but he was also scared to death, if Robert Horry is anything to go by.

If you ask Michael Jordan who was the man he feared, it was Hakeem Olajuwon. He said he was afraid of this big African. Because Hakeem is from Nigeria.

Born in Lagos, the former center is considered one of the best big men in the history of the league. But he was not a giant like the others of his time.

Drafted first overall by the Rockets in 1984, the same year as MJ, The Dream took the league by storm with his versatility. And if Mike’s words weren’t enough, add to that the center’s record of 3 MVPs, 2 DPOYs, and 2 championship rings. And on top of that, he’s known for revolutionizing his position by passing on the “Dream Shake” move to the next generation.

CIt’s not just anyone who can boast of having instilled fear in Michael Jordan. Robust in defense and incisive in attack, Hakeem Olajuwon was one of the rare specimens that the five-time MVP was very wary of.
