third and fourth in Moto3

In ‘The Cathedral’ of Assen del Dutch Grand Prixthe Sevillians David Muñoz and José Antonio Rueda shone with their own light in the Moto3 category, especially the former, who in the last three corners carried out a meritorious double manoeuvre with which he first overtook David Alonso, leader of the Championship, and then his countryman by braking too late and sneaking in where it was thought the bike would not fit. But he did it, coming in clean and without touching the man from Palacio to complete the podium together with Ortolá, first, and Veijer, second.

Is he second podium of the season for Muñozwho moves up to fifth place in the standings with 76 points, the sixth of his career. The rider from Brenner fought hard to reach the pole positions, starting from eleventh place on the grid after Q2 on Saturday, and sealing another of those great comebacks that force him to always be taken into account on Sundays. Rueda, who was left with a bitter taste in his mouth when he was preparing to climb onto the third step, has two more podiums this year and a total of 58 points to occupy seventh place in the standings.

The victory in Assen was taken by Iván Ortoláwho was beaten by the local driver, Colin Veijer, by just twelve thousandths of a second in an entry to the finish line Finished photo. Veijer, at any rate, rises to second position overall, with 115 points, 45 behind Alonso, who had to settle for fifth place.

At the end of the race, and in statements to DAZN, David Muñoz praised this brilliant third place: “It was a good race for us, taking steps from less to more, above all taking the steps that were necessary. I like this type of racing. I am very strong and it will have to be like that. We have to focus a little more on our own and not be so concerned about others in case something happens later, so that it doesn’t come back.

“David Alonso almost threw me”

He was asked if he feels he has been labelled and he sent a message to David Alonso: “I think so. What happened at Le Mans (he hit Ricardo Rossi and the Italian fell to the ground) was a racing incident. I didn’t do it intentionally and I went to apologize to Ricardo. We are strong in this type of race and, if we have to go like this, we will go. David Alonso, in a fast corner, overtook me, but almost threw me off. They are not excuses, I am not one to complain, but it is annoying to be told later. I prepared myself very well for turn eleven to come out behind Rueda and Alonso and I got into their slipstream. In the last corner I got in front of Rueda very close, but I didn’t touch him. That’s racing,” concluded the young driver from Brenes, who has three fifth places and two podiums in the last five Grand Prix (Jerez and Assen). Next weekend (5-7 July), the World Championship moves to the German circuit of Sachsenring.
