Scotland – Switzerland in a nutshell:

  • Key moment

Switzerland escapes defeat in extra time. Robertson heads the ball in front of goal and Akanji makes an excellent intervention to just prevent McTominay from closing in from close range.

  • Man of the match

Manuel Akanji not only played a crucial role for Switzerland in the final phase. He was a constant beacon of calm in the Swiss defense and also excelled in the build-up with an excellent passing.

  • Remarkable

Record night for Xherdan Shaqiri. Thanks to his wonderful goal, he is now the only player to score at the last three European Championships and World Cup. As of today, Shaqiri is also the first player to play for Switzerland in 7 (!) European Championship/World Cup final rounds.

  • Shaqiri’s pearl wipes out Schär’s own goal

After the disgrace in the European Championship opener against Germany, Scotland had something to put right. With a lot of fight and effort, the Scots got off to an excellent start against Switzerland. That bright start resulted in an early goal after less than fifteen minutes, with some luck.

After a quick counter, McGregor put the ball backwards on McTominay and he delivered a mediocre kick. It didn’t seem to be a problem for Sommer, but Schär unfortunately put his foot on the ball and suddenly Scotland took the lead.

Switzerland couldn’t get into their rhythm, but came alongside out of nowhere thanks to a dramatic action by Ralston. Shaqiri was given the ball just like that, but then did something incredibly beautiful with it. From just outside the sixteen he curled the equalizer untenably into the intersection.

For a moment the Scots seemed to have lost control. Gunn needed an excellent save to prevent Ndoye from scoring and shortly before half-time the goalkeeper had to show his ability again on a tight shot from Xhaka. In between, colleague Sommer also had his hands full with an attempt by Adams.

Ndoye misses a huge chance, Hanley heads onto the post

Switzerland could not convince in the second half either, but came very close to 1-2 on the hour mark. Ndoye got rid of Tierney well, but just when the hardest work was done, he aimed the giant chance wide. Scotland escaped, although Tierney had to be taken off with an injury.

Ten minutes later the Swiss in turn escaped unscathed. Hanley was able to head on Robertson’s free kick, but saw his header hit the post.

The Scots in the stands felt something in the air, while the Swiss had despair on their faces.

In the final phase, both teams came close to winning. Amdouni’s header went narrowly wide and on the other side Akanji was just able to prevent McTominay from finishing from close range.

Akanji: “It looks good for the next round”

    • Andrew Robertson (Scotland): “We started the game very well. Ralston then made a mistake, but let’s be clear: after that he played excellently. It is not easy to turn the switch after such a mistake. We have We had opportunities, but so did Switzerland. It was an open game with two teams going for it. We showed the real Scotland today, we are satisfied with our performance and we now have to recover fully on Sunday go for it, that will be a crucial match for us.”
    • Manuel Akanji (Switzerland): “It was a difficult match. When we played well, I had some space in the center and I was able to find the spaces between the lines. We could have won the match because we had enough chances. We chose them too often to decide high on the goal instead of going for a low shot. We should have done better in front of goal, but we also got away a few times, such as with that ball against the post Well, we are now second and things are looking good for the next round.”

    Phase by phase

    End

Switzerland does not get further than a 1-1 draw against Scotland, which has undoubtedly polished its reputation after the disgrace against Germany. Ndoye missed a great opportunity for Switzerland in the second half, as Hanley’s header hit the post. Switzerland takes a step towards the 1/8th finals with 4 out of 6, but Scotland can also continue to dream.

An extra 4 minutes will be added.

    Excellent procedure Akanji

Akanji clenches his fists after a crucial intervention. Robertson heads the ball in front of goal and Akanji just prevents McTominay from finishing.

The last chance? Amdouni heads wide from close range

    Just not for Amdouni

The Scottish fans are thrilled with Rieder’s free kick. Amdouni is able to head at the far post, but his decision goes wide.

    Yellow for Sierro

Sierro steps on Adams’ foot. The substitute receives a yellow card.

Embolo seems to free the Swiss, but is offside

    Embolo’s goal disallowed

Embolo is suddenly sent into the depths. He advances from the center line and the finish is also fine with a lob over Gunn, but the party does not continue. The goal is rightly disallowed for offside.

    No penalty

All hands on deck at Switzerland in an urgent phase right under Sommer’s nose. McTominay’s shot is blocked and the Scots claim handball. Referee Kruzliak does not respond and the VAR check does not result in a penalty for Scotland.

Gilmour makes way for the Scots. He is replaced by McLean.

    Ndoye decides wide

Ndoye tries again with an individual action, but the icing on the cake is again missing. His shot goes wide. The tension rises. Will we get another winner in Cologne?
